Occupational Therapy Services

Scope of Service

Armadale Health Service’s Occupational Therapists (OT’s) work within the hospital, in day or outpatient programs, and people’s homes, to help patients regain optimal safe and functional independence in the tasks they need to do. Your OT will discuss with you and/or your family what you were able to do before your admission and what you need to be able to do again on your return home.  They will help you identify what is stopping you from doing the tasks you need to do and problem solve and/ or teach you alternative ways of doing these tasks.

In the Community

It may be necessary for your ward OT to visit your home and identify any hazards or difficulties you experience doing every day tasks such as making a meal, getting on and off your bed or in and out of your shower.  If required you may be provided with aids to assist these and other tasks and/or shown other ways of doing those tasks.  Alternatively your GP may refer you to the OT Home Visiting service if you have mentioned difficulties with these or similar issues.  In this case you would receive a phone call from the OT who will arrange a visit to your home. The Homecare Carpenter may also visit to install rails or ramps in your home if deemed necessary.

Day Therapy & Outpatients

If appropriate you may be referred for ongoing therapy via the Day Therapy Service – this is aimed at continuing to build your functional independence post hospital admission OR to help you avoid a hospital admission. Outpatient appointments are usually for people who require a splint for their hand or arm and need further training to help their hand and/or arm improve functionally.  If this is the case you will usually be referred to the OT by your surgeon, GP or ward OT or other members of the Allied Health service.

Mental Health

Occupational Therapy services in Mental Health are currently provided to patients of the Adult and Older Adult inpatient wards at Leschen Unit.  Please refer to Mental Health Services List for further details and how to contact an OT.

Equipment Returns

If you no longer require any equipment that has been provided by your Occupational therapist you can return it by delivering it to Carl Streich Rehabilitation Unit Outpatient Department.  Look for the Pink Marri Flower on the undercover area left of the main entrance.  You can park your car here while unloading the equipment and there is a return form to fill out in the foyer.  Please ask at outpatient reception if you need any assistance to unload the equipment.
